Q. What is Convalescent Plasma Therapy?
Plasma which is the fluid portion of blood has antibodies to the COVID-19 virus in recovered patients. Transfusing this plasma to sick COVID-19 patients may help in the destruction of the virus.
Q. How effective is Convalescent Plasma Therapy for COVID-19?
Various trials have shown reduction in mortality by 30-50% in severely ill COVID-19 patients.
Q. Can I be a plasma donor?
Q. Won’t my immunity go down by donating plasma?
No. You have 5 litres of blood in your body. You will be donating only 400-500 ml of plasma containing antibodies. The plasma is made up again in 48 hours.
Q. If I develop a re-infection, will I have fewer antibodies after I donate plasma?
Even if you don’t donate, your antibodies decrease over weeks or months. However, in case of a re-infection your body has memory B cells (white cells) which respond and produce antibodies against the virus very quickly.
Q. How often can I donate?
You can donate two times a month.
Q. Is the plasma donation process risky?
The procedure for plasma removal is called apheresis which separates plasma and returns rest of the blood back to the donor. It is safely carried out over 30-45 minutes by transfusion medicine doctors in a blood bank with no side effects or weakness.
Q. Do I have to pay for donating plasma?
No. Mandatory antibody screening test is done by the blood bank free of cost once you consent to donate plasma.
